This time around -chapter of endings and beginnings- we all share the same mixed feelings. It has become like a ritual for me to slow down around this time and look back on the lessons to carry forward with you.
After reflecting on the year’s ups and downs, I believe it is equally important to focus on the year’s victories and accomplishments, as well as all of the positive behaviors and lessons that we want to carry forward into 2024.
Lessons To Carry Forward With You In The New Year
As 2023 comes to an end, I want to thank providence for whatever this year has brought for me. It certainly was a year to cherish. It taught me to be patient. It taught me to accept things the way they are. It taught me to be resilient. It taught me to LOVE. Here are the most important lessons to carry forward with you.
Have Patience
Be calm, always. This year has taught me immense patience. I learned to be patient when nothing was going my way.
I was patient when I was overwhelmed with negativity. I was patient when people were questioning my worth and my skills. And I was patient when I was losing faith in my abilities and talents.
Be it relationships or a skill you are learning, have patience. Everything will unfold in its own time. Have patience and have faith that everything will be fine.
Be Strong
Strength I feel is intrinsic, but it comes to the surface with repeated practice. Along with that you also need people around you who remind you in difficult times how strong you can be.
This year, I learned to be strong, no matter what.
Be strong enough to respect yourself and others but have the courage to say “no”.
Be strong enough to take risks but be wise enough to know when to stop.
Be prepared and have courage to act on your plans.
Being your own rock is one of the best lessons to carry forward with you in the new year.
Accept Failure
Failures are a huge part of life. Things will most often not go the way that you had planned and in those moments, you need a flip of mindset to realize that it was a blessing in disguise.
I’ve tried and tried and tried, but with every failed attempt, my resolve to succeed grew. I guess that zeal has got me to where I am today.
The understanding that this defeat is here to teach me something has had a great impact on my attitude towards life.
Trust the unforeseen future. Believe that it all happened for good.
Forgive
It is one of the greatest lessons to carry forward with you in the new year. Forgiveness is the greatest gift. By forgiving, you are freeing yourself of the burden of hurt you were carrying. By forgiving you are freeing yourself of the guilt of being angry.
Be very, very generous with forgiveness. Yourself and others alike. It makes life simple. 2023 taught me that sometimes people you love the most will stand against you and oppose you most vehemently. They might hurt you in ways that you might not have imagined before but you will be fine.
You will be better off forgiving them. You will be better off forgiving yourself for being against them.
Some Bridges Are Worth Burning While Some Worth Rebuilding
Over the past few months I have realized that some relationships and connections are worth letting go. Letting go is another one of the important lessons to carry forward with you in the new year
Let go of the things that have served their purpose in your life. Let go of the connections that do not increase value into your life and let go of the relationships that have run their course in your life. How do you recognize that is a question for another day.
But, trust your instincts. Your gut knows it. At the same time, some relationships are worth rebuilding. You might have lost track and strayed away or they might have. Accept, forgive and rebuild.
Surround yourself with people who want the best for you, everything else or everyone else is not worth your time and investment. Out of all the relationships, choose to rebuild your relationship with yourselves.
Trust Your Timeline
Another one of the important lessons to carry forward with you in the new year includes trusting that your timeline is different from everyone else. Actually, we are all running our own races in this world. You might try to look at others as your competition but actually, you are competing with yourself.
Past year has taught me that timing is different for everyone. Trust the timing of your life. Walk around with an open heart and believe that there is an amazing thing waiting to happen to you just round the corner.
It’s easier said than done, but remember that there’s always a silver lining among the clouds.
Learn From Other’s Mistakes
Learning from your own mistakes is a good thing, but if you are learning from other’s mistakes you are gonna save a heck of time. You can avoid several situations by simply observing the actions of others and the mistakes they have made in their lives.
Choose to learn from people, value their advice. Listen to the people who love you. Read more biographies, listen to more podcasts and interviews of people. Listen to them talk about their mistakes and carry forward their advice and their lessons in your own life.
You Are Worth More Than Maybes
Past year has taught me to place my value in my own hands. I make it a point to constantly remind myself that, “ You are worth more than a second thought. You are worth more than a maybe. You are worth more than a choice.”
If a certain situation or relationship leaves you with confusion, uncertainty, anxiety, and mixed feelings; you don’t need to place your energy or time there. You deserve more than a bare minimum. You don’t deserve just a flower or a bouquet, you deserve a whole goddamn garden full of sunflowers.
Accept The Imperfect World
The world is a difficult place to be if you think that people are as good as you. And the earlier you accept it, the easier it becomes to cope with hurt and sadness. 2023 taught me that even though the world is imperfect, you can find perfections and imperfections.
And what’s better than the art of Kintsugi to teach you that. You can find joy in little things. You can find joy in idiosyncrasies. Learn to look at the world for what it is rather than for what it should be.
The Bottom Line
I want to walk into 2024 with a clean heart, a tabula rasa. Where I can rewrite my story from scratch. No more pain, depression, hurt, sadness, anger and frustration. If you did me wrong, I forgive you. If I am the reason for your hurt by any chance, I sincerely apologize for it. I want my heart pure and head clear. Clear as the sky on a hot summer day. No more sadness and no more worthless tears. No more anger and no more hate. No more pain and no more negativity. I surrender myself to God. I give it all to him and let it go.
So, there you go, these were my 8 lessons to carry forward in the new year. Let me know in the comments below, which one resonated the most with you.
